Prevention Is Better Than Cure




Food hygiene is the practice of properly cooking, cleaning food to avoiding cross-contamination and prevent the spread of bacteria in food.
Avoiding cross-contamination between raw and ready-to-eat food is one of the most important aspects of food hygiene. Separate knives and cutting boards must be used for the different foods. Raw food must be stored below other foods in the refrigerator to prevent drips that could contain bacteria. Food must be chilled to proper temperature at all times and must be cooked to a temperature that kills bacteria. Disinfectants are antimicrobial agents that are applied to the surface of non-living objects to destroy microorganisms that are living on the objects.
Disinfection does not necessarily kill all microorganisms; it is less effective than sterilization. They work by destroying the cell wall of microbes or interfering with the metabolism.They are frequently used in hospitals, dental surgeries, kitchens, and bathrooms to kill infectious organisms.

A perfect disinfectant offers complete and full microbiological sterilization, without harming humans and useful form of life which are noncorrosive. However, most disinfectants are also, by nature, potentially harmful to humans or animals. Most modern household disinfectants contain Bitrex, an exceptionally bitter substance added to discourage ingestion, as a safety measure. Those that are used indoors should never be mixed with other cleaning products as chemical reactions can occur.
 The choice of disinfectant to be used depends on the particular situation. Some disinfectants have a wide spectrum while others kill a smaller range of disease-causing organisms.
TYPES OF DISINFECTANTS
·         Air disinfectants are typically chemical substances capable of disinfecting microorganisms suspended in the air. An air disinfectant must be dispersed either as an aerosol or vapour at a sufficient concentration in the air to cause the number of viable infectious microorganisms to be significantly reduced.
·         Alcohol and alcohol plus Quaternary ammonium cation based compounds comprise a class of proven surface sanitizers and disinfectants. The efficacy of alcohol is enhanced when in solution with the wetting agent.
·         Aldehydes, such as formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde, have a wide micro biocidal activity and are sporicidal and fungicidal. They are partly inactivated by organic matter and have slight residual activity.
·         Oxidizing agents act by oxidizing the cell membrane of microorganisms, which results in loss of structure and leads to cell lysis and death. A large number of disinfectants operate in this way. Chlorine and oxygen are strong oxidizers.
APPLICATIONS
Disinfectants are important chemicals used for a variety of purposes. Within homes, they are used to kill microorganisms which can grow in places such as the kitchen or the bathroom. They are widely used within the medical establishment, hospitals, health care centres and doctors' offices for purposes of killing different types of germs which may cause different kind of diseases.
Disinfectants can kill germs and microorganisms which may not be seen with the naked eye. For instance, Phenolic types of disinfectants are very good for killing bacteria. They are considered as general purpose disinfectants, and can kill organic matter.
